Loneliness in older people

Any recommended research areas?

  • Look at the 'no friends' age UK campaign, mimicking Facebook's British ad campaign "friends".
  • Could extend the theme of loneliness to the homeless or the poorer areas within society. Loneliness is also the most common / cause for addiction - you could look into this.
  • Ask friends to ask grandparents and research into company that sends students to live with old people and keep them company.
  • Primary research of old people eating / going around alone? Show that they do everything in normal life, just alone.
  • Look into the Salvation Army and their work with the old.
  • Look at statistic for elder suicides of singles / 'heart break' deaths.
Want to make some sort of campaign to show awareness / target loneliness in older people... any ideas?
  • Make it personal - try and relate to 'my mum' or 'my nan'.
  • Encourage children and grandchildren to visit family members.
  • A series of photos with type where the old persons family and friends have disappeared.
  • Play on the heart strings like with the John Lewis ad 'man on the moon'.
  • Make a campaign that appeals to younger people to be aware and considerate of this issue within the community?
  • Think about who you are wanting to talk to directly and why. What is it that you actually want to change exactly? What is the solution to the problem of loneliness? What actually could be done realistically?
This feedback session was really helpful in the sense of different possible paths and what to research. The comment about making it personal especially appeals to me, trying to relate it to our actual grandparents is something I want to look in to.
