Concept: connecting the product to where it comes from. This means connecting the coffee sold in shops to the fair trade farmers across the other side of the country. This can be done by using hessian sacks for the packaging of the coffee beans as these were what they are shipped in and contained in over seas. Also by loyalty cards, somehow connecting the farmer to the buyer possibly through an email or some sort. (These are just the start of some vague ideas).

'This video is an SOS. It was first sent by DOC2DOCK, a non-profit organisation that saves usable medical supplies from being discarded in the U.S. and sends them to hospitals in the developing world. Now, you can send the SOS further.'
The way in which they have used the actual means of transport & carriers of the supplies (the boxes) to communicate the message is really interesting and effective because it's using the every day objects which usually only have logos and slogans on to inform their important message.
Grafica Fidalga, a printing press in São Paulo, Brazil, makes posters on a 1929 German letterpress using hand-carved wooden letters.

Hand rendered type / illustration:
In a review by The Guardian, Kate Mossman describes Devendra Banhart;
'Such is his influence on psych and freak-folk in the last decade, Devendra Banhart no longer sounds particularly freaky – it's perfectly normal to record on vintage hip-hop equipment, combine flamenco guitar with frowsy 80s synths or write odes to the medieval mystic Hildegard von Bingen nowadays, as he does here (Damon Albarn is also a fan of the saint).'
This should be reflected in the album release webpage. The folk style has been represented by the use of a hand rendered typeface, which connotes a personal, organic feel. The light blue has been taken from Devendra Banharts current website, this colour looks calm which communicates the style of his music well.

Brief: Creatively re-launch Grand Café coffee to improve engagement with current and new customers. Your challenge is to visually re-think and revitalise the brand, creating designs that will not only communicate what great coffee Grand Café is, but also the good that it does.
Key elements taken from the brief:
'Grand Café promotes the social and economic benefits of certified coffee whilst providing a feel good factor and peace of mind to the customers who buy it.'
'The Grand Café brand performs well amongst its current customers but we’re the first to admit the design doesn’t bring the brand to life as expressively as it could do. We want to make it an iconic visual brand — and that’s where you come in!
Your challenge is to visually re-think and revitalise the brand, creating designs that will not only communicate what great coffee Grand Café is, but also the good that it does.
We want to move Grand Café coffee from being hidden in a cupboard underneath'
'We want to strengthen our messaging around certifications, and focus on the impact they have — so you are also welcome to think about point of sale and show us how your design thinking might come to life in such contexts. That might be great design ideas for a uniform, posters, table talkers, information booklets or something different that no other coffee shop has tried before. Consider what will empower the staff serving our coffee to communicate the stories around the certifications.'
Current branding:
Existing successful coffee branding:
Most existing coffee branding is fairly similar, there is a clear reoccurring theme of the colour brown. When researching there seems to be a lot of logos with crosses (above), coffee beans, mugs and logos in a black, stamp like effect. These are all cliches which need to be avoided in the rebrand as they state they want the branding to be iconic and to stand out on shelves.
OUGD504 / Studio Brief 03 / Type in context publication / Glossary
The idea of having a glossary was experimented with. Below are the first ideas of this, the plan was to screen print this is neon orange on the inside of the coloured front cover. However it has come to my realisation that to fit all this text on this small page the type has to be 8 point, which is too small to effectively screen print.

OUGD504 / Studio Brief 03 / Type in context publication / Letterpress / Stamping
The idea of having the letters at the bottom of the page was experimented with by stamping small letter blocks in the same colour ink used for the front cover, matching the string for the binding. However this was unsuccessful due to the size of the letter block. There is the option of printing the letters digitally however they will not be as bright as this due to the limitations of CMYK.
OUGD504 / Studio Brief 03 / Type in context publication / Screen Printing
After scanning in the final designed type, it was edited on Photoshop to create a negative appropriate to screen print. This type as well as 2 different painted typefaces were screen printed. The neon orange string is going to be used to bind the book with, then the ink was matched to this colour to keep the books aesthetic to a minimal colour pallet.
The neon ink sometimes didn't come out strong enough therefore had to be printed a couple times to get a strong enough colour, however this sometimes led to the second print being offset (below). This was solved on the rest of the prints by doing the second layer straight away onto the paper without lifting the screen up first- avoiding the chance of the paper moving away.
