OUGD503 / Responsive / Studio Brief 01 / YCN Coffee / Production

The first picture is a mock up of the negatives ready to screen print. 3 care labels were made from paper and sewn onto the hessian sack, as this blend of coffee 'Triple Certified' has to include all the 3 logos; fair trade, soil association & the rainforest alliance.

The next pictures are the development of the screen printing of 'Grand Cafe', as well as the name of the blend 'triple certified' and the weight of the coffee (500g). This was then sewn by hand with red thread to add some colour to the neutral colour pallet. The hand sewn / hand rendered typeface brings an organic feel to the packaging, relating it back to the ethics of the company. The top has been fastened with a simple pull sting. A string tie fastening was looked in to however as it's a paper fastening the paper would get crushed due to the thick flexible fabric.

OUGD503 / Responsive / Studio Brief 01 / YCN Coffee / Sketches & Development Logo

'Connecting the buyer to where the coffee came from' is the concept for the coffee branding. This is why the packing will be in hessian sacks (like how it is when picked). Stencil lettering was looked in to as this is how they're marked when farmed. However the aim for this packaging design is for it to stand out and sit proudly in coffee shops, so different, more attractive designs were experimented with.

The idea of using the sleeve on the coffee cup to change an image on the coffee cup was thought of. By having an image on the take away coffee cup of a coffee farmer with his crops, looking bare, then when the sleeve is put on the image changes to flourishing coffee plants with a much happier farmer. This offers something different to standard coffee shops, as well as highlighting the benefit of buying your coffee, as it gives the farmers more business - connecting the buyer to where it came from.

OUGD503 / Responsive / Studio Brief 01 / Secret 7 / Mock ups

Mock ups using Photoshop have been made to see what the designs would look like in context. To create the colours really bright like this, especially the yellow, they will have to be screen printed due to the colour limitations of CMYK. Screen printing will also add an organic, personal feel to the designs.

Firstly different arrangements were made on Photoshop using the original colours, then by changing the colours from the colour schemes created many different variations were created. These designs have a playful, crafty cut & stick feel to them, which is why the song 'Art School' by The Jam is one of the songs chosen, as the simple cut out shapes depict what we see as art from an early age. Also Tame Impala - The Less I Know The Better has been chosen due to it's up beat style reflecting the bright, bold colours and shapes. The lyrics, "the less I know the better" implies not knowing much, which links to the simple, youthful shapes.

To find colours, colours have been picked from photographs I personally find aesthetically pleasing in terms of colour schemes. These are colours on RGB, for Secret 7 colours have to be CMKY digitally as they need to be able to print if they are exhibited, however if these brighter colours work more successfully than the CMYK version then they can be screen printed.

Having the 3 lots of the concentric circles expanding communicates the message of searching for signal, covering a wider surface area.

Below are versions of the poster with the circles expanding in an upwards direction as this is more recognised for signal searching. A horizontal version was also tested.
