The screen print for the record sleeve was a 4 colour separation (the most colours I have ever screen printed), this was a lengthy process and the last colour (blue) was off set. Even though there were a lot of practice prints before hand these kind of slip ups always happen with screen printing.

OUGD505 / Studio Brief 02 / Product Range Distribution / Study Task 01 / Fanzines / Subversion
Fanzines supported the punk ethic that anyone could do anything themselves as long as they had the determination.
Founder of Sniffin' Glue Mark Perry: "When I heard the Ramones for the first time, it was like a revelation. It was so exciting, but there was no one writing about it."
After trying, and failing, to track down an elusive New York magazine called Punk, he took
matters into his own hands. Sniffin' Glue, named after the Ramones' song, was put together with a typewriter, felt-tip pen and the use of his girlfriend's work photocopier.
Punk declared: 'Stop consuming the culture that is made for you. Make your own culture'. It rebelled against established forms of expression and consumption; it was mainly expressed and experienced live.
A flood of punk zines followed with identifiable features, these include:
- Cut & paste graphics
- Typewritten or felt tip text
- Misspellings & crossings out
- Photocopying
- Limiting graphic experimentation to black & white tones
- Imagery based on collage, enlargement & reduction
These are the collages in I made repose to the study task.

OUGD505 / Studio Brief 01 / Licence To Print Money / Yokoland
Entering the same competition where the pixelated Norwegian bank note was created, designer and illustrator Aslak Gurholt Rønsen (co-founder of design collective Yokoland) had this novel idea:
This playful, illustrative design is really fun, the contrast between young and old is interesting and has a wide appeal. These bright colours also stand out to me and as our currency has to be created through an analogue process, these types of colours could be produced unlike with CMYK.
"It was important to find motifs that are iconic, recognisable and easy to distinguish. [With these submissions] the subject matter on the back of the notes is similar to the front, but the backs are drawn by children. It creates a connection between the two sides, while containing both a structural and conceptual difference.Children are the future, and for us, the whole idea of Norway is one of a democracy with equal opportunities for all, where the children have a central place."

OUGD505 / Studio Brief 01 / Licence to Print Money / Norwegian Bank Note Design
While researching bank note design the re design for the Norwegian bank note came up. There is a really interesting concept behind these designs, as well as differentiating the Norwegian currency from any others, making it look a lot more contemporary rather than traditional.
"Our organic pattern abstracts the sea. Seen in connection with the rational cubical pattern, it emphasizes the differences between the soft and the hard. Both patterns follow the Beaufort scale, as an expression of wind force, affecting the waves of the sea. On the 50 NOK note the wind is gentle, represented by short, cubical shapes and long, tame waves in the organic pattern. On the 1000 NOK note the wind is strong, expressed through sharp long shapes on the cubes and short waves."
OUGD505 / Studio Brief 01 / Licence to Print Money / Show Me The Money
The People's History Museum's exhibition 'Show Me The Money' was helpful as it enabled us to begin to have a more developed interrogation of financial transactions.

OUGD505 / Studio Brief 02 / Product Range Distribution / Brief
Examine graphic design outputs relating to social, political and ethical change. Aim to increase your awareness of historical examples plus contemporary practice that is responsive to 21st Century issues. Be sure to note the relationship between medium and message. You should then produce a body of research work that explores the connections between these concepts and their respective design outcomes prior to your own practical and conceptual exploration of possible products, ranges and methods of distribution that may be suggested by your preferred content or, indeed, those that reflect your own ideologies, concerns and/or ambitions.Potential outcomes:
- materials relating to an issue-led campaign (this could be one affiliated to an established organisation or a more ‘guerilla’ approach)
- a poster series
- a booklet/publication/manifesto
- a web/digital platform
- placards, banners or a set of badges
- a range of products or merchandise that communicate your identified core message
What I want to achieve:
- To create something targeted at an audience of my age + as we are the upcoming generations that will be making a difference
- To raise awareness for something which isn't known about enough
- To catch the public's attention and make the viewer feel something
- To do good for society
OUGD505 / Studio Brief 01 / License to Print Money / Brief
In an age of Apple Pay, Bitcoin, contactless, Paypal and other options for the transferring of funds, is there a future for "real" money?
Undertake research into the development of coinage and banknotes while also exploring the cultural understandings of legal tender. Following this initial engagement (including the research trip to the People's History Museum's Show Me The Money exhibition), begin a more developed interrogation of financial transactions in order to complete your own proposal for the future of the banknote.
Your proposed banknote design should be presented as a finished print that makes use of any of the varied analogue print processes available within the college's workshops. Submissions should additionally be created using a minimum of two colours/finishes. Paper size for completed work will be 21cm x 26cm with banknote designs displayed landscape. (The size of the actual banknotes are to be determined by the student when based on their design rationale. It is up to the student whether they choose to display one or two sides of a banknote on the print.)
Background
Think visually, explore both literal and lateral responses. Explore working with text and image, both combined and separately. Consider the various techniques and processes that are available to you and their suitability for conveying or re-enforcing the ideas that you are trying to communicate.
Initial thoughts:
Thinking literally and laterally is something I would like to explore in this brief, I would like to create something light hearted and humours and money can be a very heavy, serious thing - and as I am not really designing the future bank note I can have fun with it.
I have always thought that having the English banknotes celebrate the dead and the royal is fairly depressing, there is so much more that England is proud and known for which should be represented in the banknote.
