OUGD505 / Product Range Distribution / Study Task 04

"We would like to hear your pitch as though you have a finished concept for a client, so we will not be focussing on the developmental aspects to the project. We want to know the big idea, why it's perfect for your audience and your strategy for the implementation or integration of your design solutions."

Targeting 18-22 year olds, social media is something we engage in everyday therefore incorporating this element to encourage young people to vote will hopefully be successful. Or creating Apps with incentives once the person has voted, it could link with the polling stations and unlock things such as vouchers, snapchat filters and discounts.

OUGD505 / Study Task 03 / Disobedient Objects North 2

Background:

This text/image heavy layout will ask you to utilise body copy, title, date, and location, heading, sub heading, imagery, indexes, highlighted quotes. The amount of text allows for the use of imagery and the type to serve as the main visual elements.

Brief:

Design a 10 page concertina
folded brochure for a forthcoming exhibition titled ‘Disobedient Objects North’. You have to create a visually stimulating layout that showcases the artists’ imagery but does not sacrifice important information in this process. The images and information must flow harmoniously and offer a taste of what is to be expected during the exhibition.

Considerations:

Headings, headlines, body copy, grid, type, colour, image sizing, bleed, margins, flow, audience, narrative, language, purpose, size, external print methods, preparing for print, stock, distribution.

Specifications:

Format: A5 x10 – Portrait – Concertina spread (front and back).

Title: Disobedient Objects North

Sub-Title: In Association with the V&A

Date: August 5, 2016 - August 31, 2016

Location: People’s History Museum, Left Bank, Spinningfields, Manchester, M3 3ER, United Kingdom

A consistent theme on going throughout the leaflet is the use of yellow highlighted words. This has been done for the reader so that if they're skimming through they would have a brief understanding of the exhibition. Also, as this is a very text heavy leaflet, it breaks up the paragraphs a bit and makes them look a little more approachable.

Some images have been stretched over 2 pages to reflect the content of the exhibition - doesn't abide by the most aesthetically pleasing, simplistic rules.

OUGD505 / Studio Brief 01 / Licence To Print Money / Printing finishes

Originally I wanted to riso print the designs as this would enable me to have really bright colours as well as be printed neatly and accurately, however after researching it would be too expensive, therefore the designs will be screen printed.

To add quality and more of a sense of value to the designs I will emboss the number into the note, this also allows the blind to differentiate different each note.

OUGD505 / Studio Brief 01 / Licence To Print Money / Screen printing & embossing

The background went well went screen printing, however when screen printing the '£5' in gold or silver, the paint wasn't thick enough so it was very faint. By mixing in yellow to the gold this colour was made, which is more yellow than gold but stands out a lot better.

To emboss these I made a cut out of the '£5' with the laser cutter, wet the note quickly, lined it up and put it through the press. This way of doing it was not successful because as the paper was thin, the tracing paper (put in between the cut out and banknote) stuck on to the note. Wetting the paper also made this worse. A lot of different ways were tried (not wetting the paper, loosening up the press) however none worked successfully.

Lastly a hand held embossing tool was used and worked successfully. The embossing isn't very prominent but comes out just enough to make the £5 stand out more.

Here the tracing paper is stuck onto the banknote

OUGD505 / Study Task 02 / Design Thinking and Development

In groups, explore how you might encourage a UK consumer to consider the eating of – an acknowledged sustainable source of protein – insects.

We wrote down as many different ideas as we could with the time given, this allowed us to have a range of different ideas to develop further. We explored many different paths such as targeting it at health conscious people / gym goers offering it as a pop up shop to start with, focusing on the high protein, no fat aspect of it.

Our finished idea was to use cricket flour as our product. Offering it as a gluten free flour with a high source of protein.

OUGD503 / Studio Brief 03 / Project Report

OUGD503 / Evaluation

This module has helped strengthen my knowledge of competition briefs and made them a lot more accessible for my own personal practice as I now feel a lot more confident approaching them. I think the YCN brief benefitted me greatly as it has opened me up to packaging design which I had very little knowledge on before. I have enjoyed really reading in to the brief and trying to depict what the competition really want from you and interpreting this in different ways. My research prior to the production of the packaging informed a majority of the design, for example, as even though you can’t directly see clear links between Grafica Fidalga and my finished design, seeing how they designed in that part of the world made an impact on the overall aesthetic of the design, influencing it to be a lot more hand made looking and organic, just like Grafica Fidalga work very manually and let imperfections of their work shape it.
My strengths in this brief was the making part, screen printing the labels, making the bag and sewing it all together, I say this is a strength because I thoroughly enjoyed doing it and put a lot of time in to this part. A weakness in this brief was creating something for the brand that no one else had done before, I wanted to think of something innovative using sustainable products however I got hung up on this for a long time and had to move on, I think this brief would have been really successful to do with a product designer or creative advertiser, as I felt I needed something a little different in terms of a product or campaign to stand out. However I am happy with my submission for this brief and feel I worked as hard as I could with the time I had.

I think that the Poster For Tomorrow - Make Extremism History brief also benefitted me in my professional practice, as it’s very different to what I am used to designing it encouraged me to think about message I wanted to communicate in different ways, making me think of visual metaphors to help me convey what I wanted. I generated a lot of different concepts and metaphors for this brief but found the one of the poor holding up the rich most effective as it related back to the brief best as it shows an example of extremism in terms of class and money. The research I undertook for the brief in particular helped me a lot on my creative process, informing design decisions such as the rays, as seen in communist propaganda posters. My research also involved looking at past winners for similar competitions and trying to see a correlation between them; what works successfully, and what makes entries stand out. I did this for the competition briefs I entered, but for this brief in particularly I could see that visual, conceptual designs were the most successful, which is why I approached it from that angle.

Juggling the other briefs such as Secret 7 and Blank Poster at the same time tested my time management skills which I have struggled with in the past, however with this module I have felt that I have improved with my organisation, as it was very much needed with individual practice as it was very self initiated.

I have found the collaborative work a big learning curve, as not only did we all learn how to use Premier Pro, which should come in handy in future briefs, but we succeeded at working effectively as a team, utilising our own skills to make the best response we could. The research for this brief was very varied as at the start we had a lot of different possible routes. We read many articles on different cultures, sending anything we liked the look of to each other. Gathering feedback from peers allowed us to narrow down our ideas and be more specific, this helped a lot as choosing an idea and sticking to it was the most time consuming part of the brief.

In terms of this module as a whole, I have enjoyed trying to interpret briefs in different ways, thinking about what other people entering may be thinking and avoiding it. Something which I feel may be a downfall for me is the analytical written aspect of this module, this has been an issue in the past however I have made sure I have spent more time on the writing for this module, ensuring that I have someone to proof what I have written as this is something I didn’t do that last time.

OUGD505 / Studio Brief 01 / Licence To Print Money / Development

By creating this cross hatch the pink wafer lines were made. A range of different sans serif and serif fonts were experimented with. The serif looks more expensive and quality due to the flourishes on the number, therefore the font Georgia will be used. After trying out different colours and asking my peers for feedback, the brighter colours (blue, yellow) seemed most successful as they stand out and add more fun into the design through colour.

OUGD505 / Studio Brief 01 / Licence To Print Money / Biscuit sketches developed

I asked my peers for feedback on what concept was more successful (queues, rain or biscuits). The one that appeared most popular was the biscuit concept because of it’s humour and originality. I also felt this concept was strongest as it allowed a different, less serious outcome which would make people smile when interacting with it.

OUGD505 / Studio Brief 01 / Licence To Print Money / Queue design

Developing the queue idea further it has been taken in to Illustrator and added colour to - grey has been chosen for the background as England is known for having grey and gloomy weather, blue has been chosen as for this £10 represents the rain, as does the dots on the note. These dots also add to authenticity of the note so it's not as easily forged  - these could be foiled.

OUGD505 / Studio Brief 01 / Licence To Print Money / Rain & politeness sketches

Below are sketches for the layout of the banknotes. Rain and queues have been incorporated to create a design.

Also by using the idea of politeness (a very British trait) some sketches have been made. By using a more classic type, such as Times, these could be letter pressed as these would give a nice finish. Blue and red have been used to represent the Great British flag. I would use phrases such as 'please', 'thank you' and 'you're welcome'.

OUGD505 / Studio Brief 01 / Licence To Print Money / Sketches

Initial sketches for having a banknote based on the weather of Britain - rainy and windy. These designs get more complex as the higher the value, the more intricate the design would be.
