OUGD504 / Studio Brief 03 / Type in Context / Evaluation

In this brief a skill in which I have developed is binding. I managed to bind the book successfully with I am pleased with, as last year I would struggle with this leading me to mess with the overall image of the book. I had to measure out where all of the holes were going to be punctured and repeat this on every individual page of the book, this was a tedious task but the patience payed off and resulted in the book fitting together neatly, allowing me to sew the thread through the holes without any mistakes.

For research I looked in book stores which I aimed for my book to sit in, such as Village book store and Colours May Vary. I took a lot of pictures of the books which I liked and ones that related to my book, to see how people doing the same type of project created their book. I also visited websites such as ‘A Good Book’ (agoodbook.de) as it displays many examples of interesting, creative publications.

I strength I feel that I have is colour choices, even though that is everyone own preference I always enjoy picking out colours to use together. This was capitalised in this brief by the use of coloured stock for the front and back cover, as well as the neon string for the binding and the neon screen print on the front.

A weakness in my publication is that it is a little too plain, I feel it could have another element which interests the reader or even excites. It’s minimal layout becomes slightly repetitive towards the end, this can be developed in future publications by being more experimental with layout, perhaps by changing the format of the book, for example by having it square or landscape, as this could have allowed me to use the space on the page more effectively. Another weakness is the photographs in the book. Due to using a disposable camera the quality of the pictures were poor, not in terms of colour as I knew what effect the film creates, but in terms of the camera not focussing properly and composition of the images. If I ever use a disposable camera again, I will solve this by taking more pictures than I need to, so that I have more to choose from to then be able to select the most successful.

A problem I had with the production of the book is the brightness of the screen print. I screen printed the front cover to use a neon orange ink in an attempt to match the neon orange string, as this colour couldn't be printed out digitally due to the limitations of CMYK. However it did not come out as bright as I’d hoped, making the screen print a slightly lighter colour compared to the string. If I were to do this again I would solve this problem by screen printing the title in white first, waiting for it to dry and then screen printing over it in the neon orange, as this way by sitting on white the orange would be able to look a lot brighter.

I managed to organise my time effectively for this brief, I managed to produce the publication in order with no stress, however as I stretched out the time I spent on the book, it lead me to feel unsatisfied with it, I will address this next time by making sure I don’t spend too long on a brief, as this can make the designer resent their projects.
