OUGD504 / Studio Brief 02 / Logostarter / Evaluation

When creating a logo for the Logostarter brief, I feel that I developed skills in thinking about branding and identity conceptually. For example thinking of the ideas behind the logo and what messages it portrays from it’s aesthetic and what the company is saying through it. It also allowed me to explore layers within a logo, understanding that even down to the weight of line or the curve can all convey specific messages.

For research I looked into the company itself and what they stood for, I read their blog and watched their many videos they had created in an attempt to grasp a full understanding on them. I also looked in to already existing logos and what made them successful, especially logotypes playing with shape, as I felt this was most appropriate for the brand. I had to use a logo type as the company is Italian and the name ‘Radiko’ and this is a play on words in the Italian language, ‘radica’ meaning wood/ bur wood, and ‘dico’ meaning ‘to say’. So without a logotype this double meaning through the language would not of come through so easily.

A strength in this brief for me was the development of the logo, tweaking it on Illustrator to ensure it was the best possible version of itself. I made many different variations and asked not only my peers, but impartial people too on their opinions. This really made an impact to my design decisions and allowed me to develop the logo to it’s best potential.

In terms of weaknesses and areas for improvement, my indecisiveness in this brief led me to leave the project unfinished for a while, not allowing me to finish everything on time, therefore my time management became disjointed. This lead to stress which had an impact on the quality on the work. In the future I will make a plan for the brief and stick to it, resulting in effective time management and therefore quality and refined outcomes.

For the production of the logo, I struggled with making the ‘R’ at the start of ‘Radiko’ legible. I found myself stuck between trying to stick to the advice given to my in the interim crit, and putting the legibility first. This was solved my asking impartial people for their opinions and ultimately I prioritised legibility.

Overall I feel that through this brief I have learnt a lot about logo design and the importance of it and the concepts behind them, prior to this I lacked interest in logos however now I feel that this was my most enjoyable brief of the module. It has left me with a bigger understanding of logo design and a bigger interest.
