OUGD505 / Studio Brief 02 / Product Range Distribution / Study Task 01 / Fanzines / Subversion

Fanzines supported the punk ethic that anyone could do anything themselves as long as they had the determination.

Founder of Sniffin' Glue Mark Perry: "When I heard the Ramones for the first time, it was like a  revelation. It was so exciting, but there was no one writing about it."

After trying, and failing, to track down an elusive New York magazine called Punk, he took
matters into his own hands. Sniffin' Glue, named after the Ramones' song, was put together with a typewriter, felt-tip pen and the use of his girlfriend's work photocopier.

Punk declared: 'Stop consuming the culture that is made for you. Make your own culture'. It rebelled against established forms of expression and consumption; it was mainly expressed and experienced live.

A flood of punk zines followed with identifiable features, these include:
  • Cut & paste graphics
  • Typewritten or felt tip text
  • Misspellings & crossings out
  • Photocopying
  • Limiting graphic experimentation to black & white tones
  • Imagery based on collage, enlargement & reduction

These are the collages in I made repose to the study task.
